MEDITERRANEAN GAMES - PESCARA 2009
09/06/2009
The Maltese Olympic Committee has approved the participation of golf in the Mediterranean Games to be held in Pescara later on this month. Malta will be represented by three of its best golf players – Andrew Borg, Christopher Bergedahl and John Junior Verelst Micallef – the last two both under 18 years of age and all three part of the MGA national team and members of the Royal Malta Golf Club.
Andrew Borg has already represented his country in the previous two editions of the Mediterranean Games that were held in Tunisia (2001) and Almeria (2005) where he shot a 3 under par 69 (course record) on the last day of the competition placing him 11th overall from a field of 37 players. But this is the first time that Malta will be participating in these Games with a team of three players.
Eleven Mediterranean countries will be fielding teams in this year’s tournament being held at the Miglianico Golf Club a par 72, 5900 metres golf course situated approximately 20 minutes from Pescara centre. The host country is expected to show up with a strong team, as are Spain, France and Turkey. The other participating countries are Greece, Libya, Morocco, Monaco, Slovenia and Tunisia.
The Malta Golf Association has totally supported this competition with Royal Malta facilitating its premises thus making the opportunity possible for the national team to be professionally coached by David Llewellyn who visited the country regularly over these last months. David Llewellyn will be accompanying the players to Pescara as will Ian Restall, Secretary of the MGA, who will head the golf contingent that leaves the island on Friday 26th June.
The tournament proper starts on Monday 29th June with the players having the facility of two practice rounds on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th June. The competition will select the best individual player over 72 holes stroke play and the national team with the best two individual scores from three aggregated from each day over the four days.
We wish the whole MOC Maltese contingent a safe journey to Pescara and very much look forward to their return with a satisfactory haul of medals for Malta.
