21/11/2017
Eugene Cranley and Maria Woodward were declared as joint winners of the eleventh edition of the Malta Golf Association Shield sponsored by NESCAFÈ DOLCE GUSTO. As in previous years, the tournament was played in a Medal stroke play for the first day and a Stableford for the second day with the Stableford points subtracted from the Medal net scores to determine the overall placing.
30 ladies played their first day on Thursday 2nd November. Monica Borain registered the best score with a net 70, one shot better than Maria Woodward and two better than Mia Allsopp.
A force of 96 men teed off on their first day on Saturday 4th November. With a fine score of net 65, Johann Camilleri led by one shot from Sean Bradshaw and two shots from Kenneth Micallef, Mark Siddall, Martin Azzopardi and Eugene Cranley.
Sunday’s second day of the tournament saw significant changes in scoring abilities. Borain’s 20 points showed her drop significantly down the leader board. With 38 points, Gun Edlund had the best score and leap frogged to second place. Maria Woodward’s 37 points for an aggregate of 34 points was enough for her to be declared the best lady for the tournament one point better than Edlund.
The best man on Sunday was Tomas Bergendal with a magnificent 41 points closely followed by Klaus Hummel with 40 points. Stephen Knights and Eugene Cranley then followed with 39 points whilst the day one leaders struggled and could not play to their handicap.
