SUE SIMONS WINS THE 9TH MGA SHIELD

The 9th edition of the Malta Golf Association Shield sponsored by NESCAFÈ DOLCE GUSTO was won by Sue Simons with a differential score of 30 on a count-back from Luc Adam Schembri.

The tournament was played in a Medal stroke play for the first day and a Stableford for the second day with the Stableford points’ results subtracted from the Medal net scores to determine the overall placing.

39 ladies played their first day on Thursday 19th November with Laine Tutane registering the best score with a net 67 (65 when calculating the difference between the men and ladies’ tees) two better than Mandy Lucasse and junior player Filippa Konig.

The strong winds that hit the course on Saturday affected the men’s play with only two players, out of the registered 89, returning a score equivalent to their net handicap or better. At 13 years of age Slava Gulin played consistently to return a net score of 65 – three shots ahead of Luc Adam Schembri. After the first day of play, only two male players enjoyed a place in the first ten positions of the competition.

The wind abated for the second day of the competition allowing some better scores to be returned. The best stableford scores of 40 points were returned by Ricky Reeves and coincidentally also by his son Sam. Tutane, Konig, Lucasse and Gulin playing in the last flight together all played over their handicap and allowed the other protagonists to leap frog them for the lead. In fact both Simons’ and Schembri’s 38 points meant an aggregate of 1 shot better than anyone else. Having both scored the same on the back nine holes of the final day, the tournament was decided on the last six in favour of Simons who had 14 points to Schembri’s 12.
