KAHRAMAN and KONIG WIN THE 10TH MGA SHIELD

Cenk Kahraman and Filippa Konig were declared as joint winners of the tenth edition of the Malta Golf Association Shield sponsored by NESCAFÈ DOLCE GUSTO. This is the first time that the MGA Shield was presented to the overall best man and lady players due to a decision of the MGA Executive in line with gender equity over the different golf tees that mixed golf is played from.

The tournament was played in a Medal stroke play for the first day and a Stableford for the second day with the Stableford points subtracted from the Medal net scores to determine the overall placing.

35 ladies played their first day on Thursday 20th October with Filippa Konig – still a junior player – registering the best score with a net 67, one better than her handicap and two shots better than Sue Wibrew, Sarah Cassar and Michelle Allsopp.

The fine weather prevailed on the following Saturday when 80 men teed up to play their first round. Cenk Kahraman took the most advantage of the conditions and returned a gross core of 79 which after handicap calculation meant a net 60 – eight better than his handicap – and three shots lead off Patrick Carey.

Both Cenk and Filippa were able to sustain their first day scores by registering 32 and 35 Stableford points on Sunday. Whilst Filippa eased through with a six point difference of her closest challenge, Cenk managed to hang on to his first position by a mere one point ahead of Carey.
